“You Can’t Set Ibadan on Fire” — Ibadan Indigenes Hit Back at Fayose Over Olubadan Comments
A fresh political controversy has erupted following strong remarks by the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) against former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over comments he made concerning the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.
The influential socio-cultural body accused Fayose of repeatedly dragging the revered traditional ruler into political disputes and warned him to stop involving the monarch in partisan battles. According to the group, such actions are capable of creating unnecessary tension within Ibadanland.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Kola Olomide, the CCII expressed dissatisfaction with remarks made by the former governor during a recent television appearance. The council maintained that traditional institutions should be respected and kept away from political confrontations.
The organization's President-General, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole, described Fayose’s comments as provocative and unreasonable, stressing that Ibadan people would not tolerate attempts to undermine the dignity of the Olubadan. The council further emphasized that the monarch should not be drawn into political disagreements between rival actors.
CCII noted that it had previously cautioned the former governor on the same issue, insisting that repeated references to the Olubadan in political discussions show a lack of regard for the institution and traditions of Ibadanland.
The latest exchange highlights the growing sensitivity surrounding the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s political landscape, where royal institutions are often viewed as symbols of unity and cultural heritage rather than partisan actors.
As reactions continue to trail the controversy, the CCII has reaffirmed its commitment to defending the integrity of the Olubadan stool and preserving peace in Ibadanland, declaring that no individual can destabilize the ancient city through inflammatory political remarks.
