INEC Adjusts 2027 General Election Dates Amid Electoral Act Dispute and Ramadan Concerns
Nigeria’s electoral body has revised the timetable for the 2027 general elections following controversy surrounding compliance with new electoral laws and concerns over a potential clash with Ramadan.
Revised Election Dates Announced
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled key components of the 2027 general elections:
Presidential and National Assembly Elections – Saturday, January 16, 2027
Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections – Saturday, February 6, 2027
The adjustment moves the elections earlier than dates previously projected under earlier timelines.
Compliance With the New Electoral Law
INEC stated that the shift was necessary to align with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced amendments affecting pre-election processes and statutory deadlines.
Under the repealed Electoral Act, 2022, the general elections were expected to hold later in February and early March 2027. However, those dates generated criticism due to their proximity to the Islamic fasting period of Ramadan.
The commission maintains that the revised calendar ensures both legal compliance and broader inclusivity in voter participation.
Ramadan Concerns and Public Reactions
Several religious and civic groups had expressed reservations about conducting nationwide elections during Ramadan, citing possible logistical challenges and reduced voter turnout among fasting citizens.
By moving the elections to January and early February, INEC has effectively avoided a direct overlap with the religious observance.
Key Timelines for Political Parties
Alongside the new election dates, INEC released a schedule for political activities:
Party primaries: April 23 – May 30, 2026
Presidential/National Assembly campaigns: Begin August 19, 2026
Governorship/State Assembly campaigns: Begin September 9, 2026
Campaigns must end 24 hours before election day.
These timelines are designed to comply strictly with statutory requirements introduced under the new law.
Adjustment to Osun Governorship Poll
INEC also confirmed a minor revision to the governorship election in Osun State. The poll has been moved from August 8 to August 15, 2026, to ensure conformity with the updated electoral framework.
Ongoing Political Debate
The changes come amid broader political debate over the 2026 Electoral Act. Some opposition figures have criticized aspects of the legislation and its implementation, arguing that certain provisions require further review to safeguard transparency and democratic credibility.
INEC, however, has reiterated its commitment to conducting the 2027 elections within the bounds of the law while addressing stakeholder concerns.
