Lagos Investigates Alleged Abuse at Singer Simi’s Mother’s Daycare
Old Posts Spark Fresh Debate
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) is currently looking into allegations of possible child abuse at a daycare centre reportedly run by the mother of Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko (Simi). The controversy erupted after some of Simi’s social media posts from 2012 and 2013 resurfaced online. Critics interpreted the posts as potentially inappropriate remarks regarding children at the facility.
The renewed attention followed Simi’s recent social media comments advocating against rape and sexual violence. She had suggested harsher punishments for perpetrators and revealed that “almost every woman she knows has been sexually assaulted.” These statements prompted a viral debate, bringing her old posts back into the spotlight.
DSVA Steps In
Lola Vivour‑Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of DSVA, said the agency “cannot ignore public concern raised by these posts.” She confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for a preliminary investigation.
Vivour‑Adeniyi also highlighted the role of the Lagos State Safeguarding and Child Protection Task Force in monitoring the situation. She stressed that “for formal prosecution, a complainant must come forward. Without a survivor’s testimony, it would be challenging to pursue criminal charges.”
Simi Responds
Addressing the resurfaced posts, Simi clarified that they reflected her personal experiences while helping at her mother’s daycare in her early twenties. She explained:
“My posts were not written from perversion. Some people are taking them out of context.”
Simi’s statement emphasizes her intent to educate and share personal experiences rather than promote any wrongdoing.
NAPTIP Joins the Conversation
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) also announced its readiness to investigate credible reports of child abuse in daycare centres across Nigeria. The agency encourages anyone with first-hand knowledge or verifiable information to come forward confidentially.
What’s Next
Police Investigation: The Lagos Police will conduct a preliminary review of the resurfaced posts and available information.
Public Testimonies: Authorities are calling on anyone with relevant experiences to provide evidence or statements.
Child Protection Focus: Both DSVA and NAPTIP reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding children and taking all credible allegations seriously.
