DLA Condemns Sowore’s Jailing, Warns of Shrinking Democratic Space in Nigeria
The Democratic Lawyers Alliance (DLA) has strongly condemned the recent jailing of human rights activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, describing the development as a worrying sign of shrinking democratic space in Nigeria.
The group expressed concern that the continued use of legal and judicial processes against dissenting voices could weaken civil liberties and discourage legitimate criticism of government actions.
According to the organisation, the handling of Sowore’s case reflects a broader pattern of increasing pressure on activists, journalists, and political commentators, warning that such actions risk undermining constitutional rights and democratic accountability.
The lawyers’ group argued that freedom of expression remains a core pillar of any functioning democracy and should not be curtailed through punitive legal measures. It maintained that public criticism of leaders and institutions must be protected, provided it does not cross into violence or unlawful conduct.
DLA further called on authorities to ensure strict adherence to fair trial standards and due process, stressing that the judiciary must remain independent and not be perceived as an instrument for political control or suppression of dissent.
The organisation also urged government institutions to avoid measures that could deepen tensions within the civic space, noting that a healthy democracy depends on open debate, transparency, and respect for opposing views.
It concluded by calling for reforms that would strengthen human rights protections and prevent what it described as the gradual erosion of democratic freedoms in the country.
