Fresh Legal Battle for El-Rufai as Court Fixes July 1 for Bail Decision

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been arraigned on fresh charges as his legal troubles deepened with proceedings in two separate courts.

The former governor appeared before the Federal High Court alongside his former Special Adviser, Jimi Lawal, and several corporate entities over allegations bordering on abuse of office, financial impropriety, and money laundering.

During the proceedings, El-Rufai and the other defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them by the prosecution. The case forms part of a wider investigation into the handling of public funds and contract awards during his administration in Kaduna State.

Following arguments from both the prosecution and defence teams on their bail applications, the presiding judge adjourned ruling on the requests until July 1, 2026.

In a related development, the former governor also appeared before another court in a separate matter involving allegations of abuse of office and financial misconduct linked to his time in office. Proceedings in that case were adjourned for further hearing at a later date.

The high-profile trial has continued to attract national attention due to El-Rufai's prominent role in Nigerian politics and his eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State.

While the former governor has consistently denied all allegations against him, insisting that actions taken during his administration were lawful and in the public interest, investigators maintain that their findings point to irregularities in the management of government funds and public resources.

The outcome of the July 1 bail ruling is expected to shape the next phase of legal proceedings in one of the country's most closely watched political cases.
