INEC Hands Over Certificates of Return to Winners of June 20 By-Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented Certificates of Return to candidates who emerged victorious in the June 20, 2026 by-elections conducted across various parts of the country.
The presentation ceremony formally confirmed the successful candidates as duly elected representatives of their constituencies, marking the completion of the electoral process following the polls.
Speaking during the event, INEC officials congratulated the winners and urged them to uphold the trust placed in them by the electorate. They were reminded that their primary responsibility is to provide effective representation and work towards the development of their respective constituencies.
The by-elections were conducted to fill vacant positions in the National Assembly and state legislative houses across several states. The elections attracted participation from major political parties and were closely monitored by stakeholders.
INEC noted that the issuance of Certificates of Return signifies the official recognition of the winners and paves the way for them to assume office and begin their legislative duties.
The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and inclusive elections, stressing the importance of maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Political observers believe the outcomes of the by-elections could have implications for future political alignments and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With the presentation of the certificates completed, the newly elected lawmakers are expected to take up their responsibilities and begin representing the interests of their constituents at their respective legislative levels.
